Dr.
Laurie Stowell CSU San Marcos
Professor, College of Education
Upon arriving at Cal State San Marcos in 1992, Dr. Laurie Stowell
immediately set about creating a credential program designed specifically
for pre-service education students interested in becoming middle school
teachers. Until that time, it was rare to find such a program in the
United States. Her foresight, understanding of the middle school student’s
specific needs, and hard work lead to the establishment of our Middle
Level Teacher Education Program which has since been modeled at other
CSUs and elsewhere across the nation.
Beyond addressing the important educational needs of middle school
students and the university students who want to teach in middle
schools, Dr. Stowell has truly made a discernable difference in
the academic lives of practicing teachers, many of whom graduated
from CSU San Marcos’ Middle Level Teacher Education Program.
Dr. Stowell is a sought after thesis advisor in the College of Education
and has served as a mentor to many of our university’s undergraduates
as well as to members of the Future Teachers Club. Several of her
thesis students credit her for bringing their thesis to fruition;
this is due to the time she devotes to them and her constant encouragement.
Currently, Dr. Stowell is the Director of the San Marcos Writing
Project, which sponsors conferences, summer institutes for teachers,
writing workshops for students, and a writing-community newsletter
– all aimed at promoting literacy skills in K-12 schools.
She received the Outstanding Professor award in 1996-97, the California
League of Middle Schools Educator of the Year award for San Diego
County in 2002-03 and is the recipient of the prestigious California
State University 2005 Wang Award.
