David L. Pagni
CSU Fullerton
Professor of Mathematics
David L. Pagni, a veteran Cal State Fullerton mathematics professor who has been
called "one of the most respected math educators in the world," was
among the five winners of the California State University 2003 Wang Family
Excellence Award. Dr. Pagni was selected from nominees throughout the 23-campus
CSU system for this honor which also provided a cash award of $20,000. The Wang
awards were established by CSU Trustee Stanley T. Wang, who in 1999 gave the
system $1 million to recognize outstanding achievements of faculty members and
administrators over a ten year period.
Dr. Pagni joined the institution as a junior professor in 1969. During his academic
career at CSU Fullerton, he has received over $13.6 million in federal grants
primarily from the National Science Foundation (NSF). A prevailing goal in his
funded projects and writings is to advance the learning of mathematics by working
with K-12 students, and by helping teachers improve their mathematics content
knowledge and the pedagogy they use in the classroom. His most recent NSF award
is a 5 year grant of $6.4 million designed to improve math programs in four Orange
County school districts. This latest effort will reach more than 9,000 high school
and 7,000 middle school students. An innovative and thoughtful educator, Professor
Pagni has dedicated himself to making a difference, whether by shepherding thousands
of new teachers through the intricacies of math education or by providing small
scholarships to needy students.
Called upon frequently to speak and conduct mathematics education workshops in the
United States and around the world, Professor Pagni is a product of the CSU system.
He completed a bachelor's degree magna cum laude at California State University,
Chico, a master's degree at the University of Notre Dame, and a Ph.D. at the
University of Wisconsin, Madison.
